Application Guidelines for a Full-time Faculty (without tenure) Position

(Area Studies and Plurilingual/Multicultural Education: Social & Human Sciences and Chinese)

School of International Liberal Studies/ Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies, Waseda University

 

1. Field of specialization: Area Studies and Plurilingual/Multicultural Education (Social & Human Sciences and Chinese)

2. Work responsibilitiesPlace of WorkIn principle at Waseda University Campus.:

(1) Chief subjects to be taught:

   In English

      Introductory Class in the area and the specialty (e.g. International Relations: a Chinese perspective)

      Advanced Class in the specialty (e.g. Selected topics in International Relations)

   Both in English and in Chinese

      Intermediate CLIL(Content and Language Integrated Learning) class to prepare students to study the specialty both in English and in Chinese (study-abroad preparation) (e.g. Academic IR reading in Chinese & English: selected topics)

   In Chinese

      Intermediate Class for academic writing and reading in the specialty (study-abroad preparation) (e.g. 运用汉语研究国际关系的学术阅读与写作)

      Advanced Class in the specialty (study-abroad follow-up) (e.g. 近代日中关系研究)

(2) Consultation for students who wish to study abroad in Chinese speaking countries.

(3) Creation and management of a joint study group between regular and exchange students (in English and Chinese)

3. Number of faculty to be hired: 1

4. Status: Assistant Professor (without tenure)

5. Salary and wages:

(1) Duty Hours: In principle, 8 hours or less a day, 4 days or more a week. (total of 40 hours or less a week)

(2) Salary, Benefits, Commutation Expenses: provided in accordance with university regulations

   Annual salary and monthly payment (model wage):

   (Age: 30)

   Annual salary (before taxes) 4,915,920 yen (for AY 2017)

   Monthly payment (before taxes) 409,660 yen (for AY2017)

 (3) Retirement Payment

None (a farewell benefit will be provided in accordance with university regulations)

(4) Holidays: Sundays, New Year Holidays, National Holidays, and University Anniversary (excluding days specified by the university on which classes are held)

(5) Vacations: vacations determined in acts such as Labor Standard Acts and vacations determined by the university (e.g. summer and winter vacations, office shut-down periods)

(6) Social Insurance: The employee  shall  be  enrolled  in  the  Employee's Pension  Insurance, Health  Insurance, Workmen's Compensation Insurance, and Employment Insurance.

6. Term of employment: in principle, September 1, 2017-August 31, 2019

                     During the term of employment it is not allowed to hold other full-time positions concurrently.

                     *Although his or her term of service shall be until August 31, 2019, Waseda University may re-employ (after updating the contract with) him or her for one year subsequent to the end of the current contract.  The application for re-employment will be considered based on the applicant’s academic and educational accomplishments and other relevant aspects during the fixed term.

7. Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in the academic areas (obtained up to 5 years before the time of appointment [September 1, 2017])
  2. A demonstrated ability to teach in English and in Chinese
  3. A demonstrated will to teach CLIL courses (Content and Language Integrated Learning) with a focus on Chinese studies

  1. A letter of application in English, explaining your interest in and suitability for a faculty position at the School of International Liberal Studies / Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (both in teaching and research). TWO copies.

Applicants should provide the following information (please submit TWO printed copies along with the additional required documents). Please provide b, c and d within 2 pages as a rough guide:

  1. Personal information and academic experience (Full name, nationality, home address, phone number, e-mail address, field of specialization, educational background (dates of entrance to and graduation from high school and thereafter. Please note if you have been awarded any grants.), employment record including starting and retirement dates, current employer and position (Please note whether you have tenured position or not. Also indicate the title(s) in Japanese if you have position(s) in Japan.).

b. Research accomplishments (Ph.D. and Master's Degree Thesis titles, publications,

presentations, academic and professional activities, honors and awards, and externally

funded projects. For publications provide the title, year, publisher and place of

publication. Please mark the titles of refereed publications with an asterisk. With

regard to forthcoming publications, please submit a letter from the publisher/journal

editor verifying that they have been accepted for publication.) In case of non-English research accomplishments, both English and original titles should be provided.

  1. Research and field of specialization.
  2. Teaching experience and interests (courses and content taught).
  1. Courses you might teach at the School of International Liberal Studies / Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies with regard to the chief subjects to be taught (as described above).
  2. Language skills (native language, proficiency in other languages, for non-native languages please list periods you studied in the relevant language environment.)
  3. Photocopies of one or more documents in each of the following areas (up to five in each area):
    1. Documents (including publications) relevant to your role as a teacher, including course syllabi and any additional materials you wish to provide, such as class handouts. Summary of these documents (one page, A4 size).
    2. Documents (including publications) relevant to your role as a researcher within five years before the application, and a summary of these publications (approximately one page, A4 size).
  4. Photocopy of diploma of Ph.D.
  5. A recommendation letter from the department head of current affiliation or the Ph.D. degree awarding university (such as Dean, Director etc.) (in English) sent directly by the referees to the address below in signed, sealed envelopes. Letters must arrive by May 15 2017.

Note: The documents requested in categories (3), (4), (5), and (7) may be provided either in English or Japanese. The documents requested in categories (1), (3), (4), (5), and (7) may be written in any format. In principle, the documents will not be returned to the applicant. Please further note that we are unable to respond to inquiries about the status of your application.

5.給与などの待遇:

(1)勤務時間等 週4日以上、1日8時間以内(週合計40時間以内)

(2)給与、諸手当、通勤費 本学規程による。

  30歳講師(任期付)モデル賃金(2017年度)

  年俸4,915,920円(税込)を12で除し、

  月額409,660円(税込)を毎月支給

 (3)退職金

 支給しない。(餞別金を本学規程により支給する。)

(4)休日 日曜日および、大学があらかじめ授業を実施すると定めた日を除く年末年始、国民の祝日、大学創立記念日

(5)休暇 労働基準法等法令に定められた休暇および、大学が特に定めた日(年始、夏季一斉休業等)

(6)社会保険 厚生年金、健康保険、労災保険、雇用保険に加入する。

 

6.採用期間:原則として、2017年9月1日~2019年8月31日

          採用期間中は他に本務を持つことはできない。

          当該期間満了後、業績・勤務状況を考慮の上、1年の再任用を認める場合があ

  1. 博士の学位を有する者、また、採用時(2017年9月1日)に博士取得後5年以内の者。
  2. 英語および中国語で講義ができること。
  3. 中国語を主としたCLIL(内容言語統合教育)科目への意欲があること。
